Tesla is taking steps toward entering the Indian market, ramping up hiring efforts and scouting locations for a potential showroom, according to reports. However, while the company has long discussed local manufacturing, no official confirmation regarding a production facility has been confirmed.
According to Reuters, Tesla has posted job listings for 13 positions in India, including store management and delivery operations roles, signaling plans to establish a retail presence. The company is also reportedly looking for showroom space in Mumbai and New Delhi.

Discussions between Tesla executives and Indian government officials have been ongoing, with talks reportedly centering on policy incentives, tax breaks, and infrastructure support. India’s high import tariffs on foreign-made vehicles have been a key hurdle for Tesla, and Musk has previously stated that establishing local manufacturing would depend on policy adjustments.
While some experts suggest Tesla may set up a factory in India to avoid these tariffs, no official announcement regarding investment commitments or a production timeline has been made.
The company’s next-generation vehicle platform was initially planned for its Gigafactory in Mexico before being shifted to Austin, Texas, last year. Whether India will play a role in Tesla’s future manufacturing strategy remains unclear.
India, the world’s third-largest car market, has been pushing for wider electric vehicle adoption as part of its clean energy initiatives. If Tesla moves forward with local production, it could significantly boost the country’s EV ecosystem.
For now, Tesla’s expansion into India appears to be focused on retail and sales, with manufacturing plans remaining speculative. Neither Tesla nor Indian officials have confirmed a final decision on local production.
